Munich, Germany – One hundred of the finest examples of draftsmanship from the permanent collection of The Morgan Library & Museum are on view at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. This exhibition has provided an exciting opportunity for the Morgan to collaborate with one of the foremost European collections of works on paper, the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung Munich, and to share the treasures of its collection with a wider public in one of the cultural capitals of Europe. On view through 3 January, 2009.
The drawings on view in Munich—chosen for their outstanding quality and art historical significance—represent the tremendous range of the Morgan’s collection, spanning the fifteenth through twentieth centuries and including works by Italian, French, German, Netherlandish, and Spanish artists. There are excellent examples of nearly all types of drawing in a wide variety of techniques, revealing the aesthetic appeal and modes of expression found in works on paper. Drawings by Michelangelo, Raphael, Pontormo, and Parmigianino brilliantly illustrate the integral role that drawings played in artistic development during the Italian Renaissance, as do exceptional works by Venetian artists such as Tintoretto and Veronese.
The Spanish school drawings include remarkable works by Jose de Ribera and Francisco Goya, and the Dutch and Flemish schools are represented by artistic luminaries such as Hendrick Goltzius, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Rembrandt. The Morgan is particularly strong in works by French artists from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries. Sheets by Nicolas Poussin, Claude Lorrain, Antoine Watteau, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Jacques-Louis David, and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres testify to this golden age of French art. The Morgan also has an exceptional group of works on paper by artists of the modern age. On display in Munich will be drawings by Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Georges Seurat, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Jackson Pollock.
The exhibition simultaneously chronicles the history and growth of the Morgan’s holdings, containing works from the initial group of drawings purchased in 1909 by the financier J. Pierpont Morgan Jr. from the pre-Raphaelite painter Charles Fairfax Murray, and represents notable acquisitions and gifts since the founding of the Pierpont Morgan Library in 1924. Once the Morgan opened as a public institution, drawings as well as other treasures from the collection were regularly exhibited in its galleries and were lent individually and in groups to museums in America and Europe. It is to this tradition that this exhibition belongs.
